1. Торгис  не очень пытался  выглядеть  внешне привлекательно для противоположного  пола, который презирал помятую  одежду, немытые волосы (матовые), бледные  щёки, молодость потерявшая всю  яркость и пыл.

2. Странно  было видеть мистера Голспи  снова в серых тонах зимнего  утра. Это было подобно тому, как  ты видишь того, кого только  что встретил в своих оживленных  мечтах.

3. Мистер  Голспи был постоянно в раздумьях,  не похож на реального человека, которого она знала, но больше  как исключительно живой и запоминаемый персонаж из  пьесы, которую она видела.

4. Лена  со своим отцом уехала в  Париж, оставив Торгиса живо  и напористо представлять множество  случаев, в которых Лена шла  улыбаясь в объятьях богатых и красивых французов и американцев.

5. Возможно, она могла бы преподнести это  ему мягче, успокоить его, объяснить.  Но прежде чем подойти к  двери она ярко представила  себе его реакцию и передумала.

6. Поскольку  Тоби стоял впереди машины, кто  – то появился на дороге, другая фигура была хорошо видна в лучах фар.

14. Когда  ланч закончился, он быстро выскользнул  из столовой и нашёл временное  убежище в своей комнате. Он  не хотел никого видеть в  тот момент.

15.  Чёрный дрозд снова запел, его  пение звучало невыносимо отдаленно  и странно в тишине.

16. Мистера  Дерсингема она не любила, но  и не ненавидела, она просто  терпела его.
