Английский глагол представляет собой структуру, которая в течение всего периода своего развития подвергалась значительным изменениям. Эти изменения сильно сказались на его современном состоянии. Чтобы полностью осознать структуру этой системы, необходимо изучать ее с самого начала ее зарождения. Это позволит не только проникнуть к первоисточникам, но и более грамотно подходить к целостному восприятию всей системы.

Английский язык — национальный язык Великобритании, Соединенных Штатов Америки, Австралии, Новой Зеландии и большей части населения Канады. На сегодняшний день люди, населяющие вышеуказанные страны, имеют свой вариант произношения, который считается их национальным языком. Почти любой язык имеет различные, официально закрепленные варианты произношения, поэтому существование американского, австралийского и канадского английского ни у кого не вызывает удивления.

Language is a fundamental human faculty used for creative expression, face-to-face communication, scientific inquiry, and many other purposes. Most humans are born with the ability to acquire language automatically and effortlessly if provided the right input by their environment. It is estimated that there are 6,000 to 7,000 languages in the world. We differentiate among languages based on whether they are mutually understandable, but this distinction gets murky and many linguists consider a language to be a “dialect with an army (or navy),” i.e. a political construct.

The English nation belonged to the western subdivision of old Germanic tribes, and the dialect they spoke later became the English national language.
1. The first borrowing comes in the 1st century BC with Romans. These were words of trade, food, that Germanic tribes hadn’t known. (cheese, cup, port, wine)
Runic alphabet: Frank’s casket, Ruthwell cross.
2. The 5th century. Several of Germanic tribes (The Angles, the Saxons, the Jutes) migrates across the sea to the British Isles. There they were confronted by the Celts, the original inhabitants of the isles. Especially numerous among the Celtic borrowing were place names, names of the rivers, hills (Avon, Exe) (bald, down)

The alphabetic way of writing was originally based on a phonetic principle: it was designed to give an accurate graphic representation of pronunciation by using letters to indicate sounds. Mod E spelling displays many deviations from this principle. The reasons are to be found in the history of English sounds. OE spelling was phonetic: they attempted to use a separate letter for each distinct sound; the sound values of the letters were for the most part the same as in Latin. Their spellings, however, were not absolutely consistent, for some letters indicated two or more sounds: the letter ‘s’ stood for four different phonemes, c — for two; f, ძ, Þ and s indicated two allophones each (which developed into phonemes later).
