The educational system of G.B.

I think that education is a key to a good future. And schools are the first step on the education-way. Schools help young people to choose their career, to prepare for their future life; they make pupils clever and well-educated. They give pupils the opportunity to fulfill their talent.

Great Britain doesn't have a written constitution, so there are no constitutional provisions for education. The system of education is determined by the National Education Acts. The national Education Act provided 3 stages of education: primary, secondary and further education. Education in Britain is compulsory and free for all children between the ages of 5-16.

Schoolchildren attend a primary school for 6 years (5 to 11 years). When students transfer to Secondary School at the age of 11, they do not take any examination, but their reports are sent on from the Primary School. Most children – over 80 percent – go to a comprehensive school. "Comprehensive" means all-inclusive. They admit pupils of all abilities.

Actually after young people reach 16 they have 4 main 'roads' of their next life: they can leave the school, stay at school, move to a college as a full time student or combine part-time study with a job. More ambitious pupils continue to study in the 6th form. They stay at school for one or two years to prepare themselves for university. They have only three or four main subjects, which are necessary to pass.

After finishing secondary school or college you can apply to a university, polytechnic or colleges of higher education.  There are more than 44 universities in Britain. The oldest and world-known universities are Oxford and Cambridge. English universities greatly differ from each other. They differ in date of foundation, size, history, tradition, general organization, methods of instruction and way of student life. Students working for their first degree at university are called undergraduates or “fresher”. After three or four years the students will take their finals. Those who pass examinations successfully are given the Bachelor’s degree: Bachelor of Arts for History or Bachelor of Science. The first postgraduate degree is Master of Arts or Master of Science. Doctor of Philosophy is the highest degree. It is given for some original research work which is an important contribution to knowledge. In the university students have a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory classes. The academic year devides into 3 terms.

The educational system of G.B. is extremely complex and bewildering. The studying in England is very prestigious, interesting and popular all over the world. Every year hundreds and thousands of students come to this place to get the best education. It is hard to find parents who don’t want to see their children as graduates of a British college or a University. Besides the studying in Great Britain is cheaper than in other countries. So if you have a chance to study there, don’t lose it.
