Samara

      Samara is the sixth largest city in Russia. It is situated in the southeastern part of Russia, at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers.

      Samara is 425 years old. The city has seen a lot during these years – both loud fame and quite spells.

     Samara, like every large city, is divided into the “old” and “new” parts. Samara’s old downtown section is like a book on the history of architecture. All buildings were made in different styles. This mixture of styles prevails in the old city. The choice depended wholly on the owner’s taste. Everybody in merchant Samara strove to make “his own” bank or mansion look unlike any other building.

     The city started to awaken from its slumber only in mid-19^th century. Samara became a major trade center, because railways and ship navigation on the Volga developed. Industry in Samara flourished.

     Samara’s economy swiftly developed during the Great Patriotic War. Gross industrial output increased more than fivefold.

     Samara enjoys the reputation of being the theatre city. It has the oldest and best-known Drama Theatre in the country, an Opera and Ballet House, the Puppet Theatre and the Theatre for Young Spectators.

     There are a lot of museums, monuments, parks and squares in Samara. And all of them are connected with history. They contribute to the beauty oh the city a lot.

     Our city is famous for its wonderful embankment. Colorful flowerbeds and cut bushes make it a favourite place for the citizens in spring, in summer and in autumn.
