Great Britain

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. They lie to the north-west of Europe. The British Isles are separated from the continent by the narrow strait of water which is called the English Channel.

The United Kingdom consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England, the central part, occupies the most of the island of Great Britain. To the north lies Scotland and to the west the third part of the country, Wales, is situated. The fourth part is called Northern Ireland and is located on the second island. Each part has its capital. The capital of England is London, Wales has Cardiff, Scotland has Edinburgh and the main city of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It's one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is more than million people. London is situated on the river Thames. The city is very old and beautiful. It was founded more than two thousand years ago. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the West End, the East End and Westminster. London has many places of interest. One of them is Buckingham Palace. It's the residence of the Queen. The English are proud of Trafalgar Square, which was named so in memory of the victory at the battle. There in 1805 the English fleet defeated the fleet of France and Spain. The last place of interest I should like to mention, is the British Museum, the biggest museum in London. The museum is famous for its library -one of the richest in the world.

Лондон - столица Великобритании, ее политический, экономический и культурный центр. Это один из самых больших городов в мире. Население Лондона - более 11 миллионов человек. Лондон находится на реке Темзе.

Город очень древний и красивый. Он был основан более чем 2000 лет назад. Традиционно Лондон делится на

несколько частей: Сити, E'cn-"yl? Ист-Энд и Вестминстер. 

В Лондоне много достопримечательностей. Одна из них -

Букингемский дворец. Это резиденция королевы. Англичане гордятся Трафальгар-сквером, который был назван так

в честь победы в сражении. Здесь в 1805 году английский флот разгромил флот Франции и Испании. Последняя

достопримечательность, о которой я хочу упомянуть, - это Британский музей, самый большой музей Лондона.

Музей знаменит своей библиотекой - одной из самых богатых в мире.
