A role of women in a contemporary society.

Since the ancient time women were thought to be the weaker sex. This name was probably given by men, who decided that the nature made males and females opposite in everything, so if they are the stronger sex, there must be somebody who needs their protection. Indeed, women are weaker than men in body strength as well as in mental stability. But men used it as an excuse to keep women far from the prior positions in the world, in the society and even in the house for many years. Nowadays there’s a recession in the values and meanings of the past centuries, a reversal of roles between men and women. But did it change the position of a woman in a society?

If we take a look at a typical American woman of the 17^th century, you’re most likely to see a simplified version of a slave. Women’s role in a society was diminished by the fact that only a man was empowered to run any important business. In fact, women were that power which stood behind men’s back and did all the necessary and dirty work: helped to build settlements, stood at the kitchen sink and raised children, always by men’s side as a wife, adviser and servant. It was very convenient for men, but women weren’t satisfied with their unequal position towards men. They didn’t want to lead only domestic life, and they rebelled. As the time went by, the weaker sex resisted more and more and slowly got rights and a recognition in a society. Men were forced to unleash women upon their world and let them be equal. It was just what the feminists fought for. But if they got it, why the feminists still exist?

The thing that what’s written in a paper is not always works in a real life. It’s said women and men have the same chances to obtain a position at work, to have the same duties at home and take an equal part in children upbringing.  But still there’s an undercover rule that it’s preferable to choose a man for a serious job irrespective of the fact that a woman may be more educated and qualified. You’ll hardly ever meet a female politician not because women aren’t able to be an adept in running an important business, but because men want to save their masculinity by taking the right for the last word. For women it’s traditional to work with people (be a teacher, a nurse, a nanny, a social worker) and do “easy jobs”, which often don’t require high education and they’re less paid. In the modern society you can see a reversal of roles, when a woman is a family breadwinner and a man is in search for himself\his ideal job or stays at home for some reasons. Though, there’s mostly no reversal of roles in kids upbringing. Men don’t even try to replace women in this ‘job’ to help them, especially if a child is only an infant. And it seems that women, despite the hard work, don’t trust their kids with men. What women want from a home-stay husband is at least to share household chores with him. And again, not a big number of them are ready to become a maid. A man is supposed to be the master of the household in terms of giving order to all members what to do; they don’t want to admit that a woman are the actual master. Without women a TV dinner would be the most popular meal for men. Still, there’s not much appreciation for women from the men’s side.

As many years ago, women are supposed to be flexible and stable. Nowadays men claim they made women equal to them, but did a woman’s life change so much since they’ve got a right to vote? Women have all opportunities, but there’s always a limit for them; men stay at home instead of them, but all house work is still on women. There’s more confidence in a modern woman, but all her duties remain. And there’s an assumption that the situation will be the same in many years.
